A Journey to the Origins of Civilization in America
Just a few hours north of Lima, lies an archaeological treasure that redefines the history of the continent: the Sacred City of Caral-Supe. Recognized as the oldest civilization in the Americas and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, Caral is an essential destination for those wishing to delve into the dawn of complex societies and monumental architecture in Peru.
The Cradle of Andean Civilization
Caral developed approximately 5000 years ago, coexisting with great civilizations such as Egypt and Mesopotamia. Long before the Incas, and even before the Chavín or Nazca cultures, the inhabitants of Caral were already building impressive pyramids, circular plazas, and temples, demonstrating an advanced knowledge of engineering and social organization.
What makes Caral even more fascinating is its late discovery and its peaceful nature. Archaeological research, led by Dr. Ruth Shady, has revealed a society with no evidence of warfare, focused on trade, harmony, and knowledge of music (flutes and other instruments were found). Its impact extended throughout the region, laying the foundations for the development of future Andean civilizations.
What to See in the Sacred City of Caral?
A visit to Caral is a journey through monumentality and mystery. Be prepared to explore:

- Major Pyramids: Admire the imposing stepped pyramidal structures, such as the Main Pyramid, Amphitheater Pyramid, and Gallery Pyramid, which dominate the landscape.
- Sunken Circular Plazas: Observe these enigmatic structures believed to have been used for public ceremonies and rituals.
- Temples and Altars: Discover the spaces where offerings and religious activities were performed, some with evidence of fire pits for rites.

- Residential Areas: Although less elaborate, these will give you an idea of the daily life of the ancient Caral inhabitants.
- The “Eye God” Geoglyph: A figure etched into a nearby hillside that adds more mystery to the site.
- Site Museum: Complement your tour with a visit to the small museum displaying artifacts found in Caral and offering detailed explanations about the culture.
Caral: A Center of Knowledge and Harmony
Findings at Caral suggest it was a society that valued scientific knowledge (astronomy), music, and peaceful relations. Its sophistication, without the use of warfare or large empires, makes it a unique model of civilizational development in the world.
